The bricks will eventually crumble, or you may have a difficult time controlling the flames within.

What about Fire Pit Rings?
You may be wondering: what about brick fire pits with steel rings? Can I use regular bricks for a fire pit if it has a ring in the middle?
The reason we don’t recommend installing the rings is because they’ve been tested to be carcinogenic. The steel ring could theoretically protect regular bricks from the flames and prevent them from crumbling, but that would be putting your safety at risk. Instead, we prefer using fire pit blocks that stand the test of time, all in coordination with other hardscaping on your property.
